What is alopecia nervosa?

Nervous alopecia is a type of hair loss, normally reversible according to our doctors specialists, influenced mainly by our style and way of life. Nowadays, rush, stress and nerves are the order of the day, and we do not realize that this has a direct impact on our hair health.

Specifically, alopecia nervosa is defined as a type of alopecia whose triggering factor is stress. Normally, alopecia nervosa does not occur with the appearance of hairless areas, but the patient does experience a noticeable daily loss of hair, as well as capillary density.

Although the Stress is the main cause of this type of alopecia, there are other aspects to take into account that can motivate or lead to this sudden hair loss as a bad nutrition. The recommended thing in these cases is to go to a hair clinic in Spain to evaluate each particular case and find the origin of the hair loss, mainly so as not to confuse this type of alopecia with others such as androgenic alopecia whose effects are not reversible and must be treated as soon as possible.

Types of alopecia nervosa

Nervous alopecia, or hair loss due to stress, can manifest itself in different ways depending on the personal circumstances of each patient. Depending on what it is, the medical team will recommend one treatment or another.

trichotillomania

La trichotillomania It is understood as a type of nervous alopecia since it consists of the act of compulsively twisting and pulling out the hair. That need of the person to pull out their hair is of psychological origin where stress usually plays an important role.

That hair pulled out by the patient will grow back as much as possible, but if this behavior continues over time it can end up causing serious damage to the hair follicles. Namely, it may be the case that a person with trichotillomania ends up with localized baldness.

In this case, the main treatment for trichotillomania is psychological with behavioral therapies.

Telogen effluvium

El telogen effluvium is hair loss due to one's own hair life cycle, which can be altered by stress. In other words, when a patient has telogen effluvium, it is because a large part of their hair follicles have passed into the telogen phase, in which the stem falls off to make way for new hair.

La hair loss due to covid19 It is lately the main reason why more and more people suffer from telogen effluvium. Normally this hair loss is temporary and reversible, although it is true that it is advisable to resort to medical hair treatments to reduce this intense loss and promote hair growth.

alopecia areata

A type of alopecia that can develop as a result of high levels of stress is alopecia areata. This is usually a complex disease, since there is not enough scientific evidence to know why the patient's own immune system attacks the hair follicles causing their destruction. Consequently, a dermatological specialist is required to treat alopecia areata, since these they do permanently cause hairless areas.

Treatments for alopecia nervosa

Of the different types of alopecia nervosa seen above, telogen effluvium is the most common and at the same time the easiest to solve. However, in the event of unusual hair loss or one that is accompanied by a lack of density or hairless areas, a correct medical diagnosis is essential, accompanied by a capillary analysis.

Reduce stress levels

Generally speaking, once high stress levels are reduced, hair will stop falling out. This is why it is important not only to take care of hair health, but also mental health.
