Depression and alopecia: are they related?

According to rate of alopecia in Spain, a large part of the population suffers from hair loss caused by some type of alopecia. There are several factors that can trigger irreversible hair loss and, depending on its origin, various treatments are used to solve it. In this context, The possible relationship between depression and alopecia is one of the issues that tends to worry the most But is it true that depression causes alopecia?

From Hospital Capilar, a clinic specializing in hair grafting in Madrid, Murcia and Pontevedra, we explain the relationship between depression and alopecia, as well as possible treatments to stop hair loss.

How does depression affect hair?

Living through intense times of stress, anxiety or depression has a direct impact on our hair health. Depression affects the hair as its quality worsens, since it is common for people who suffer from this disease to put aside their hair care routine.

On the other hand, the high levels of stress derived from depression cause hair to fall more intensely by developing what is known as telogen effluvium. In these cases, the hair that falls out comes out again, so it does not usually generate bald spots, since the hair follicles do not come off, only the hair.

Can depression cause alopecia?

With regard to depression and alopecia and according to the doctors from Hospital Capilar, the truth is that depression does not cause alopecia as such. The androgenic alopecia, the most common of all, has its origin in a hormonal imbalance, normally of a genetic type, so the development of depression or any other disease of this type is not considered as the origin of any type of alopecia.

However, depression and alopecia could be related insofar as, as we have previously commented, they generate telogen effluvium. Just as there is a relationship between stress and hair loss, depression also causes hair loss, in most cases reversible.

Hair loss due to depression: what to do in these cases?

Although hair loss due to depression is normally temporary and reversible, in many cases a considerable loss of density is generated that is often excessively worrying. In these cases it is essential to know how to act since, although depression and alopecia are not related a priori, the exact origin of this hair loss must be found.

Use hair loss products

When hair loss is mild or moderate, it is beneficial to use hair loss products. These types of formulations stimulate the functioning of the hair follicles, keeping them in the best conditions and thus stopping hair loss.

Go to an expert hair clinic

In cases in which we appreciate a considerable loss of density, including the appearance of areas without hair, it is essential to go to a hair clinic in Spain where you can receive a medical diagnosis. As we have previously mentioned, finding the origin of hair loss is key to knowing how to act in each case.

En Hospital Capilar will find a medical equipment highly trained and qualified who will answer all your questions when you make your medical diagnosis at no cost.

Hair treatments to stop hair loss

Currently there are medical hair treatments aimed at stopping hair loss and improving its quality with proven efficacy. The medical team can recommend the use of any of these solutions in cases of depression and alopecia. In any case, it should be a doctor who determines which hair treatment to follow based on the previous hair analysis.

Hair mesotherapy

One of the most demanded hair treatments today is the hair mesotherapy. Through the infiltration of a combination of vitamins and drugs adapted to the patient, it is possible to stop hair loss and promote hair growth. Hair mesotherapy is highly effective, especially in cases of androgenic alopecia, substituting the consumption of oral drugs.

Platelet Rich Plasma

El Platelet Rich Plasma It is another of the hair treatments of Hospital Capilar. It consists of extracting a small amount of blood from the patient which is subjected to a special centrifugation process. In this way, it is possible to separate the platelets rich in growth factors from the rest of the blood components. These platelet cells infiltrate the scalp through microinjections, thus promoting hair regeneration, stopping hair loss and stimulating hair growth.
