What is the anagen phase of hair?

The anagen phase of hair is the stage of hair growth. When the Hair follicles They are in the anagen phase, the hair comes out and grows, gains thickness and develops fully. According to medical team of Hospital Capilar, it is the longest stage of the hair cycle, since the anagen phase of hair lasts a minimum of 2 years, and can reach 4 or 7 years depending on each person.

During the anagen phase of hair, hair follicles produce new hair. A single hair follicle can contain up to 4 hairs, which will grow and develop linearly until that same hair follicle enters its catagen phase or transition phase in which it will stop growing and subsequently fall out. Hair grows approximately 1 centimeter per month.

It is important to note that all hair follicles do not begin the same stage of the cycle at the same time, but rather each one of them has its own rhythm and hair cycle. If the opposite occurred, when the follicles were in the anagen phase they would grow at the same time, but when the telogen phase all the hair would fall simultaneously and abruptly. Therefore, throughout the scalp there will be hairs in full growth and others that will fall out to grow again.

The length of the hair is determined by this anagen phase of the hair. The longer this phase lasts, the greater the hair growth will be; while if it stops due to a hormonal alteration, nutritional deficiency or any other type of anomaly that may affect the follicles, the hair will not grow enough.

How do I know if my hair is in the anagen phase?

It is difficult to determine ourselves which hairs are in the anagen phase, since the hair will have the same appearance in any of its stages. In any case, the majority of hair under normal conditions remains in its anagen phase as it is the longest-lasting stage. What we can look at to get a slight idea is the hair density and the number of hairs that fall per day. It is normal for around 100 hairs to fall out daily.

However, in specific hair clinics we have exploration and trichology equipment with which it is possible to analyze and study the hair in depth and detail. Thus, professionals can determine the general condition of the scalp and if there is any alteration that affects the health and quality of the hair follicles.

Is it possible to lengthen the anagen phase of hair?

Currently there are hair treatments infiltrates with which it is possible to deeply care for the hair, stop hair loss and strengthen it, thus lengthening the anagen phase of the hair follicles. The most widespread are the Platelet Rich Plasma, or capillary PRP, and the hair mesotherapy. To carry out each of them, a prior medical evaluation is necessary.

What happens if you pull out a hair in the anagen phase?

If you accidentally pull out a hair in the anagen phase, it has no relevance nor will it influence the life cycle of the hair follicles.
