How do I know if my hair transplant was done wrong?

It is often difficult to detect when a hair transplant is poorly performed and when it is due to the common side effects that occur after hair surgery. However, we can detect certain signs that indicate when the hair transplant has not gone well at all:

  • Unnatural appearance of implanted hairWhen the follicular units grafted into the recipient area make the hair look unnatural in terms of direction, density or generate the so-called "doll hair", it could be the beginning of a bad technique.
  • Excessive loss of implanted hairIt is common for the grafted hair, and even the native hair, to fall out after the first month of surgery. This is known as Shock Loss and is due to the stress that the scalp suffers from the surgery itself. This is completely normal and the hair will grow back stronger. However, if hair loss persists over time or is alarming, it is advisable to consult a professional as it may be a sign of a problem.
  • Low density and low graft survival rateThe results of hair transplantation require a certain amount of patience, as we will not be able to see them until a year has passed. If, after 12 months of the intervention, we notice thinning in the treated areas or areas with a lack of density, it is possible that a good technique was not used or the patient is not responding properly to the medical treatment.
  • The donor area has bald spots. Hair extracted from the donor area does not grow back. This is why a good hair transplant technique involves working correctly on the donor area as well, so that the extraction is concealed and the area is not excessively damaged. Otherwise, it is an indicator that the hair transplant was poorly done.
  • Asymmetrical front lineIf we notice a certain asymmetry in the front line, it is possible that its design has not been executed properly.
  • InfectionsThe appearance of infections, persistent scabs or abnormal scars can also be signs that something has gone wrong, either during surgery or in the postoperative care that the patient must perform.

Possible causes of a bad hair transplant

A poorly performed hair transplant can have various causes, including:

  • Improper surgical techniquePoor execution of the technique during surgery can be responsible for a poor result.
  • Lack of experience of the medical teamAn untrained and inexperienced medical team may make mistakes during surgery that affect the final outcome.
  • Lack of postoperative care. Failure to follow medical instructions during the postoperative period considerably increases the risk of complications and may affect the healing process of the scalp.
  • Physiological characteristics of the patientIn some cases, patients may have certain physiological characteristics or even some pathologies that contraindicate hair transplantation. This is why a medical assessment prior to hair implantation is essential.

If you have had a low-cost hair transplant in Turkey, it is important to keep in mind that the health conditions and quality of the treatments may not be the same as in a specialized hair clinic in Spain such as Hospital Capilar.

Risks of a poorly performed hair transplant

A poorly performed hair transplant can have negative consequences for your health and self-esteem. Permanent loss of the grafted hair can be one of the consequences in the most serious cases. We may also be dissatisfied with the aesthetic result, especially when the result is unnatural.

Amongst the risks of a hair transplant The most common is the development of infections. This does not necessarily occur because the hair implant is poorly done, and in most cases it is solved by taking medication without complications for the final result of the transplant.

Can a poorly performed hair transplant be fixed?

Yes, in many cases a poorly performed hair graft can be corrected. Normally a second intervention is necessary. For this, a FUE hair transplant, a technique that offers more natural and less invasive results. However, a prior medical assessment is essential to adapt the solutions to each particular case and to study the viability of a second surgery.
