Scientific advances in the hair sector continue, and a group of scientists from the University of Pennsylvania has managed to regenerate hair follicles in mice. This could be the first step in the development of new treatments for hair loss. So could hair regrowth in mice be the ultimate remedy for baldness?
En Hospital Capilar, hair clinic in Spain with offices in Madrid, Murcia and Pontevedra, we tell you to what extent the regeneration of follicles in mice could become an alternative to treat alopecia.
The experiment carried out by American scientists has managed to make hair regeneration a reality in mice. The study is based on the cellular alteration, known as WTN, in wounds of the mice themselves. This modification of the cellular structure has promoted the creation of new hair follicles.
To understand it in depth, it should be noted that the WNT chain in cells is responsible for cell growth. As far as hair is concerned, it promotes the development and growth of hair follicles.
When due to some type of capillary pathology, such as androgenic alopecia, the hair follicles are destroyed, there is no option beyond hair grafting to regenerate hair follicles. However, this experiment that has achieved hair regeneration in mice shows that capillary wounds open the way for hair regeneration. This is because the skin of a wound has characteristics similar to those of the embryonic state so, contrary to what used to be thought, the skin when there are wounds in mammals has greater plasticity and regeneration capacity.
This recent discovery opens other avenues of research regarding the regeneration of tissues, hair and even organs. However, we cannot yet say that hair regeneration in mice is seen as a solution to baldness, since there is still a long way to go in this regard.
When some type of alopecia It leads to the destruction of the hair follicles, they do not develop again and it is for this reason that the hair that falls out does not grow back. The current most demanded remedy, mainly because of the natural results it offers, is the hair transplant. However, this is a method with certain limitations since not everyone can opt for it, it depends, among other factors, on the patient's donor area from which the follicular units are extracted. If this donor area is not enough to cover the area affected by baldness, the medical team in the diagnosis will determine the non-viability of the intervention.
Is it possible that hair regrowth in mice is the beginning of other alternative methods to end baldness?
Although other methods may be considered in the future to combat alopecia, there are currently several ways to stop hair loss effectively.
The consumption of drugs aimed at curbing alopecia, as well as to stimulate hair growth, are common in cases of hair loss. It must be a doctor who prescribes them, so a previous diagnosis in a hair clinic is necessary.
En Hospital Capilar, clinic specialized in hair medicine, we have effective treatments to stop hair loss. One of them is known as Hair Redensification Treatment, or HRT.
It consists of the application of pharmaco-mesotherapy adapted to each patient through microinjections directly on the scalp. With them, it is possible to block the hormone that causes androgenic alopecia and stimulates hair growth.
Another of the hair maintenance treatments is the Capillary Regeneration Treatment, or CRT. Obtaining the plasma from the patient's own blood promotes hair regeneration, making the hair visibly healthier.
When the hair that has fallen out has already stopped growing, the only way to recover the hair again is through a hair implant. It consists of a minimally invasive outpatient surgery by which the follicular units are extracted from the donor area and implanted in the area to be treated.
The results of the capillary graft are given a year after the intervention, although after six months you can already see the first changes. The key to achieving an optimal result is to carry out a correct postoperative period.
