Types of hair graft: How are they different?

Hair interventions are increasingly the order of the day. Alopecia is a pathology that affects many people and hair transplantation is presented as the only alternative to regain hair. However, depending on individual needs or the previous state of the area in question, we can use several types of hair graft techniques: How are they different? We give you all the information!

What is a hair graft?

Before delving into the types of hair grafts that exist today, it is necessary to understand what a hair implant really consists of.

A hair implant is a minimally invasive outpatient surgery in which the follicular units are extracted from the donor area, the one that is not affected by the alopecia, to later implant them. We understand follicular units as those groups of follicles contained in the same "bag". Thus, a follicular unit can be made up of several follicles or hairs. Upon obtaining them, they are implanted in the receiving area, that is, that affected by baldness.

This is the general hair graft process. What defines the different types of hair grafts are the way to perform each of the steps mentioned above.

Types of hair graft: What are the main differences?

At present we can find several extraction and implantation methods with which to identify the different types of hair graft that exist.

Next, we will tell you what are the types of hair grafts that we can find today, as well as the differences between them.

Hair graft with FUE technique

El hair implant with FUE technique (Follicular Unit Extraction) is the most widely used today. This is due to the natural results it offers, since leaves no visible scars as in the case of the FUSS technique.

What mainly differentiates the FUE technique from other types of hair grafts is the way in which the follicular units are extracted, as well as their implantation in the scalp.

Follicular units are extracted individually thanks to an instrument known as a micromotor. Once these necessary follicular units are extracted, they are placed in petri dishes to preserve them properly and they are classified and divided according to the number of follicles.

The next step is the incisions. The surgeon in charge of the intervention makes the incisions with a sapphire scalpel in the receiving area, that is, that affected by alopecia in which we want to implant the follicular units. This is a precision exercise, so it is recommended that it be a experienced medical team who performs this type of surgery.

The last phase of the intervention is the implantation of the follicles manually one by one in the incisions made previously. After finishing the postoperative where all medical recommendations must be followed to avoid possible complications and, thus, not compromise the survival of the grafts.

Hair graft with technique DHI

El DHI is a technique derived from FUE. This is also widely used but is reserved only in certain cases, for example in incipient alopecia to redensify certain areas that do not require shaving or patients who do not want to shave.

The differentiating element of DHI With the rest of the types of capillary graft, it is the instrument used to perform the surgery. It is a kind of hollow point pen in which, once the follicular units are extracted, they are loaded and implanted directly on the scalp without the need to make previous incisions.

Hair graft with FUSS technique

The hair graft with the FUSS technique (Follicular Unit Strip Surgery) is also known as the strip technique. This, unlike the FUE, does leave visible scars since it extracts a strip of scalp from which, later, the follicular units are extracted.

The FUSS technique is one of the types of hair graft less used today precisely because of the inconvenience of having a scar in the lower area of the neck.

Body Hair Transplant

Body Hair Transplant refers to body hair transplantation. The difference of this technique is that the follicles are not extracted from the scalp, but from other parts of the leather such as the torso.

En Hospital Capilar We do not use this type of hair graft since the results it offers are not so natural as when we use the occipital and temporal areas as the donor area, as is usually done in the FUE technique. This is because the growth rate and thickness of the body hair is not the same as that of the hair.

Hair graft with ARTAS robot

The ARTAS hair graft is a robotic intervention in which the extraction phase is carried out by the robot itself thanks to the configuration of intelligent algorithms. The incisions in the receiving area are also carried out by ARTAS. However, implantation must be carried out manually by specialized hair transplant technicians.

Beard Transplant

In addition to hair grafting, there are also interventions with which to achieve density in areas where hair does not grow naturally. The beard graft is one of them.

Using the FUE technique mentioned above we can redensify the beard and give it the design we want. In this case, the follicular units are extracted from the lower part of the donor area to later implant them in the area of the beard to be treated.

Eyebrow graft

In the same way that we can redensify the beard, another type of hair graft that allows us to regain hair in areas where we had lost it is the eyebrow graft.

The procedure is the same as in the beard graft in terms of the extraction of the follicular units, but the implantation is carried out on the eyebrows; Either respecting the previous design or doing a total reconstruction in some cases, the orientation of the eyebrow hair is imitated to obtain a harmonious aesthetic result.
