Hospital Capilar on TVG News: World Bald Day

Every year, October 7th is celebrated as World Bald Day with the aim of raising awareness of a condition that affects both men and women: alopecia. Currently, half of the Spanish population suffers from this disease, although today, in most cases there is a solution. TVG Noticias has invited us to talk about hair transplants as a solution to alopecia on this World Bald Day.

World Bald Day

Baldness is a reality that affects a large number of people around the world. This is why October 7 was declared as World Bald Day to, mainly, proudly make baldness visible in men but also in women.

However, what was previously considered a practically irreversible condition, we can now say that baldness is, in most cases, an option. This is why Oscar Mendoza, CEO of Hospital Capilar, intervened in the TVG news explaining the high demand for hair surgeries and treatments against alopecia.

Spain: the country with the highest percentage of bald people

Although alopecia is a disease with a high number of people affected worldwide, Spain is the country with the highest rate of alopecia in the world with 44,5% of bald people. The most affected are men, although women are also susceptible to various types of alopecia. The most common is called androgenetic alopecia (AGA) which causes the baldness that we are used to seeing.

How to fight alopecia

The androgenetic alopecia mentioned above, although it has no cure as such, does have treatment to stop its progression. For this, a prior medical assessment is necessary since the treatments are adjusted according to each case, although it is usual to require the combination of oral drugs such as Minoxidil and Dutasteride, and infiltrated treatments such as capillary mesotherapy with drugs or Platelet Rich Plasma. These treatments are aimed at stopping the progression of alopecia, but they will not make hair grow in those areas where it stopped growing naturally. In these cases, the only method by which it is possible to have hair again in the bald areas is a hair transplant.

El hair graft It is a minimally invasive outpatient surgery that is highly in demand in our country. It consists of extracting healthy hair follicles from the donor area, the one that is not affected by alopecia, and implanting them in the bald areas. The results are definitely noticeable one year after the surgery, although they are already visible after the first 6 months of the intervention.

Hair transplant in Galicia

Although Madrid or Barcelona are thought of as the nerve centres of hair transplants, the truth is that Galicia leads the majority of surgeries performed in Spain. The proximity to the habitual residence makes many Galicians and even residents of other areas of northern Spain go to Pontevedra to carry out hair treatments to recover your hair.
